The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has issued a show cause order against a taxi driver in Cebu City for overcharging a Korean tourist, an act the agency described as a serious violation of public trust.
“This is a serious violation of public trust,” Santos said, emphasizing that “overcharging is illegal and is a punishable offense.”
In a press conference, LTFRB representative Maria Santos said the driver charged the passenger ₱525 for a trip that should have only cost around ₱300.
The LTFRB directed the driver to explain his actions through the show cause order. Santos warned that failure to comply would result in the issuance of an arrest warrant.
According to the driver, he decided to overcharge the passenger due to the rising cost of fuel. However, the LTFRB maintained that such justification does not excuse the violation.
Santos said the incident highlights the agency’s ongoing efforts to monitor and regulate public transport.
“This is why LTFRB continues to regulate and check for violations,” she said.
She also urged the public to report similar incidents. “Don’t hesitate to report to LTFRB” when faced with such issues, Santos added.
